One of the important rules about the arts is that there are no rules that can apply automatically to different individuals. There are standards of achievement, but there are no rules governing a yet-to-be-made work of art. What I can do well, other people would do badly, and vice versa. All the interesting photographers - artists of any kind - have a marked character and it shows up not so much in the expressive nature of their work, but in the structure of it or the way they proceed in that work. So, I don’t want to know what photography is.
